Get Tested, Greenpoint: Free EPA Air Testing This March
If you live in eastern Greenpoint, this is an important heads-up for local families.
This March, the EPA is offering free indoor air testing for homes and businesses located within the Meeker Avenue Plume area — and it’s a simple step that can make a real difference to household safety.
What is the Meeker Avenue Plume?
The Meeker Avenue Plume refers to underground chemical vapors that can move through soil and potentially enter buildings as indoor air pollution. While this sounds alarming, the good news is that free testing and pollution control systems are available, and when installed, they are highly effective at keeping indoor spaces safe.
Why this matters for families
Many families spend long hours indoors, especially in winter
Children are more sensitive to air quality
Testing is free, quick, and non-invasive
If needed, the EPA installs an indoor pollution control system at no cost
Currently, only about 25% of buildings in the affected area have been tested, so local officials are encouraging more neighbors to take advantage of this opportunity.
Priority testing area for 2025
This year’s focus area is:
Between Norman Ave and Nassau Ave
Between Monitor Street and Sutton Street
If you live or work in this zone — whether you’re a renter, homeowner, or landlord — you are eligible.
